Threads ads and brand topic marketing service Hong Kong - THOR PR & Marketing

Threads ads have been open to Hong Kong advertisers since 2025, yet most brands are still posting and waiting. Here is the practical path from topic content to ad amplification to trackable enquiries.

Since its launch in 2023, Threads has become the most active text-based conversation platform for Hong Kong brands outside Instagram. Many SME owners have opened an account and published posts, only to see no engagement and no enquiries, until the account is effectively abandoned. In 2025 Meta opened Threads ads to Hong Kong advertisers, giving brands a tool to amplify topics. But ads are the last step. If account positioning, topic content and genuine engagement are weak, ad budget only buys empty reach.

This article sets out the practical steps we follow when running Threads marketing for Hong Kong brands: from organising topic content, to amplifying with ads, to connecting the result to trackable enquiries.

When did Threads ads open in Hong Kong, and what formats exist?

According to Meta's published timeline, Threads ads were piloted in the United States and Japan in January 2025, expanded to more than 30 markets in April 2025 with Hong Kong and Taiwan in the first Asia-Pacific group, and reached full global availability in January 2026 for all eligible advertisers.

In practice, Threads ads are not a separate platform. They are a placement inside Meta Ads Manager called "Threads feed":

  • Formats: image, video and carousel, with catalog ads added later
  • Delivery: included by default in Advantage+ placements, and can be ticked or unticked under manual placements
  • Reporting: use the Placements breakdown in Ads Manager to see Threads impressions, clicks and cost on their own

In other words, a brand already running Facebook or Instagram ads only needs to add the Threads placement to the same campaign, with no new creative required. That convenience is also the trap: an Instagram ad image dropped into Threads usually looks out of place.

Threads marketing versus Threads ads: what is the difference?

Many brands treat the two as one thing. Their roles are completely different:

Item Threads marketing (organic topic content) Threads ads (paid placement)
Goal Build brand topics, genuine discussion and followers Push proven content to a larger audience
Content source Brand account posts, comment engagement, creator partnerships Image, video or carousel creative in Ads Manager
Cost structure Copywriting, image production and engagement management Ad budget, charged per impression or click
Speed Builds over time, but results stay with the account Instant on, instant off
Why it fails Unclear positioning, posts without a point of view Creative that ignores platform tone, no landing page or enquiry button

Our approach: use organic content to test which topics earn real engagement, then use ads to amplify the best-performing posts. Ads are not for rescuing an account nobody responds to. They are for scaling content that already works.

From topic content to enquiries: a 5-step plan

Step 1: Account positioning, deciding what you talk about on Threads

Threads users expect opinions and conversation, not product shots. Positioning answers three questions: which industry voice you represent, the three questions your target customers care about most, and who speaks (the owner personally, the team, or a brand persona). With clear positioning, later copy stops reading like adverts.

Step 2: Topic planning and copy, one topic set per month rather than post by post

We recommend planning in topic sets. Each set centres on one customer pain point, broken into 6 to 10 posts from different angles. Formats that work well for Hong Kong SMEs include:

  • Question posts: ask target customers a practical question to invite replies
  • Opinion posts: take a position on an industry issue so readers agree or push back
  • Behind-the-scenes posts: show process, trade-offs and lessons learned to build authenticity
  • Customer FAQ posts: answer publicly the questions you hear most during sales
  • Comparison posts: option A versus option B, helping readers see which type they are

Step 3: Genuine engagement and replies, because Threads runs on conversation, not posts

The Threads algorithm clearly favours posts with back-and-forth comments. Replying within the first hours after posting, commenting under relevant topics as the brand, and responding to criticism rather than only praise all do more than publishing extra posts. The engagement management we arrange for clients is done by real people in the brand's voice, not scheduled, mechanical comments.

Step 4: Creator partnerships, borrowing someone else's context for your selling points

Followers trust a creator's voice. A creator discussing your product or service from their own angle prompts more discussion than a brand talking about itself. Partnership content must carry Meta's "Paid partnership" label and tag the brand. This is both a platform rule and the basis of reader trust.

Step 5: Ad amplification and enquiry tracking, scaling what has been proven

When a post earns organic engagement clearly above average, that is the moment to amplify it with Threads ads. Adapt the post's tone into an image or short video, make sure the landing page has a WhatsApp button or enquiry form, and set up event tracking on the website so enquiries from ads can be counted separately. Online topics can also feed offline activity, for example steering Threads discussion to a street marketing or roadshow event to close the loop between online and on the ground.

Compliance baseline: no fake accounts, no bought engagement

The Threads marketing market includes so-called "real-person comment" and "buy likes" services. We explicitly do not use them, for three reasons:

  1. Meta's Inauthentic Behavior policy prohibits artificially inflating content with fake accounts or coordinated activity, and violations can restrict the account
  2. Commercial partnerships must be disclosed: creator content needs the "Paid partnership" label, and hiding a commercial relationship breaches platform rules and the misleading-omission provisions of Hong Kong's Trade Descriptions Ordinance
  3. Fake engagement brings no enquiries: bought likes and comments never become customers, and they pollute your data so you cannot tell which content actually works

Our Threads marketing and account management service is built on topic planning, genuine engagement and creator partnerships, with all partnership content disclosed as the platform requires.

How to measure: four sets of numbers, kept separate

A useful monthly Threads report lists the following four groups separately, instead of one "total reach" figure:

Metric What it measures Common mistake
Publishing Posts, creator posts, ad creatives Treating volume as results
Reach Organic reach, ad reach (Ads Manager placement breakdown) Mixing organic and paid
Engagement Comments, reposts, quotes, follower change Counting likes only, ignoring comment quality
Trackable enquiries WhatsApp button clicks, form submissions, actual qualified enquiries Treating button clicks as sales

One honest note: no agency can promise a post will go viral. What we can do is keep testing topics, record the data, move resources toward content with genuine response, and judge the work by trackable enquiries rather than surface engagement.

Which channels should Threads work alongside?

Threads is good for opinions and conversation, but one platform rarely covers every audience. Retail and F&B brands can add Xiaohongshu (RedNote) marketing and account management to reach mainland residents in Hong Kong and visiting mainland shoppers; B2B services can route Threads discussion to website service pages and pair it with search visibility. Our social media marketing service combines platforms around the business goal rather than doing a little of everything.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Can I run Threads ads in Hong Kong? Yes. Meta expanded Threads ads to more than 30 markets including Hong Kong in April 2025 and completed the global rollout in January 2026. Hong Kong advertisers simply tick the "Threads feed" placement in Meta Ads Manager; formats include image, video and carousel.

Q2: How many posts per month does Threads marketing need? It depends on the plan and the number of topics. We usually plan in topic sets of 6 to 10 posts from different angles, supported by comment engagement. Post count is not a performance metric; posts with genuine comment exchanges are worth more than many posts nobody answers.

Q3: Do you use fake accounts or buy comments? No. We arrange real people to engage in the brand's voice and work with creators, with partnership content labelled "Paid partnership" as Meta requires. Fake engagement breaches platform policy and does not produce real customer enquiries.

Q4: Can I run Threads ads only, without organic content? Ad delivery can be bought on its own, but we usually recommend basic account positioning and a few organic posts first. Otherwise users who tap through to the account find an empty profile, and ad conversion drops sharply.

Q5: How long before Threads marketing shows results? Organic content takes weeks to months to build; ads deliver as soon as they run. We do not promise viral posts or enquiry volumes. Instead we report monthly on publishing, reach, engagement and trackable enquiries as four separate sets of numbers, and adjust topics based on the data.
